Controversy

Eastern Washington University is no stranger to controversy from 1881 until 1973 the university's official mascot was the Savage. In 1973 the overwhelming majority of the student population voted to keep the mascot, but were overruled by the board of trustees, who settled on the university's current mascot of an eagle. The appropriation of Native American culture for the sake of aesthetic seems to be one of Eastern Washington Universities more enduring legacies. Tawanka Commons has been a campus mainstay since it opened its doors in 1964. Originally thought to mean "to help" and used by the Tawanka Women’s Honorary Service Organization which ran from 1926 till 1960. The word tawanka comes from the Lakota language and actually means "willing to do" the only indication of this         can be found on a small plaque in the building itself. Despite the controversy surrounding the buildings name nothing has been done to address this in any sort of official capacity.
